During each betting interval in the game of poker, one player is designated to act first, known as the button. The button moves clockwise around the table after each hand is dealt. In order to keep the game fair, the player to the left of the button must post the small blind.

After the initial bet, each player must then place the amount of his chips (representing money) into the pot equal to or greater than the total amount of the previous bets (called the ante). This is called being in the pot.
